Butamirate is a cough-suppressing drug used orally to treat irritable cough. Unlike codeine, it is not related to the opioids.

Binding to receptors in the cough center in the medulla oblongata in the brain inhibits the cough stimulus and relaxes bronchial muscles.

Butamirate has a half-life of 1-2 hours.

Drug Interactions

Interactions with butamirate may occur with concomitant use with expectorants, central depressant drugs, and alcohol.
