Basics

Dihydralazine is a prescription medication with antihypertensive properties. It belongs to the chemical class of hydrazinophthalazines. It is a derivative of the drug hydralazine. It is indicated for the treatment of arterial hypertension when first-line therapeutic agents are not effective.

It is generally administered orally and is available in tablet form.

Pharmacology

Pharmacodynamics

The mechanism of action is not clear at the molecular level. Dihydralazine relaxes the muscles of the blood vessels. This decreases peripheral resistance and lowers blood pressure.

Pharmacokinetics

The bioavailability of dihydralazine is about 30-50%. The substance is subject to a high first-pass effect in the liver. Metabolism occurs hepatically by acetylation of the drug. The plasma half-life is four to five hours. The active substance is predominantly excreted renally.
