Fluspirilene is a long-acting antipsychotic used in chronic schizophrenia. It is formulated as a sustained-release drug and administered parenterally.
Pharmacodynamics
Fluspirilene does not differ significantly in its action from other antipsychotics such as fluphenazine or perphenazine. Like the other representatives of this group, fluspirilene blocks dopamine receptors and thus achieves its sedative, drive-reducing and, above all, antipsychotic effect.
Side effects
Contraindications and precautions
The drug must not be used in diseases caused by dopamine deficiency. This includes mainly Parkinson's disease.
The effect of sleeping pills and alcohol may be enhanced by concomitant use of fluspirilene.
