Basics

Malonic acid is a homeopathic active ingredient that is used to treat regulatory disorders of the body's own enzyme system. Malonic acid is a dicarboxylic acid and is usually a part of other molecules, such as proteins. It is usually present in colorless crystals and is easily soluble in water.

Effect

Malonic acid is an important component in the production of fatty acids and is obtained from acetyl coenzymeA. It also acts in the citrate cycle as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme succinate dehydrogenase. This inhibition prevents the citrate cycle from continuing. High doses of malonic acid therefore count as cytotoxic. The LD50, i.e. the lethal dose at which 50% of the test animals (in this case rats) die, is 1310 mg/kg body weight. The citrate cycle is an important process for energy production in our body.

Dosage

Always take malonic acid exactly as described in the package leaflet or as advised by your doctor.

Adults:

The usual recommended dose is 22 mg 1-3 times a week .

The recommended dose for acute symptoms is 22 mg daily for 3 days .

Malonic acid is used intramuscularly (application into the muscle), subcutaneously (application under the skin) or intradermally (application into the skin).

Children & adolescents:

The usual recommended dose is 22 mg 1-3 times a week .

The recommended dose for acute symptoms is 22 mg daily for 3 days .

Malonic acid is used intramuscularly (application into the muscle), subcutaneously (application under the skin) or intradermally (application into the skin).

Side effects

The following side effects may occur:

  • Allergic reactions

Interactions

There are no known interactions, as no studies have been carried out.

Contraindications

Malonic acid must NOT be taken in the following cases:

  • In case of allergy to malonic acid

Age restriction

Malonic acid can be used from the age of 12.

History of the active ingredient

The name malonic acid comes from the Latin word "malum", which means "apple". This has the historical background that malonic acid was discovered in 1858 during the oxidation of malic acid.
