Basics

Nonylvanillamide, nonivamide or pseudocapsaicin is an active ingredient used to treat pain and inflammation. It belongs to the group of capsaicinoids and is mainly applied as an ointment, gel or cream to affected areas of skin. Typical areas of application are sports injuries, tension, muscle and joint pain. Nonylvanillamide is also an ingredient in pepper sprays, which are used by the police, among others. Nonivamide is mainly found in plants and spices and is extracted from pepper.

Effect

Pseudocapsaicin works by being applied to the skin as an ointment, cream or gel and binding to the TRPV1 pain receptors. This binding leads to an increase in local temperature and subsequently to a desensitization of the pain receptors and thus to pain relief. This desensitization is caused by the reduction in the number of substance P, which is responsible for the peripheral sensations.

The half-life of nonylvanillamide, i.e. the time the body needs to excrete half of the active substance, is around 7 minutes.

Dosage

Always take nonylvanillamide exactly as described in the package leaflet or as advised by your doctor.

Adults:

The ointment should be applied as thinly and as little as possible on first application in order to wait for skin reactions. If no symptoms occur during the first application, the ointment can be applied 2-3 times a day to the affected area.

However, the maximum daily dose should NOT exceed 3 applications.
