Pharmacodynamics/Mechanism of Action:
Potassium is used in hypokalemia (potassium deficiency) and is intended to regulate it. For the organism, this active ingredient is essential for nerve conduction, contraction of cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscles, energy production, synthesis of nucleic acids, maintenance of blood pressure and normal renal function.
As a food additive (E261), it is used in acid regulation, i.e. pH, as a preservative and acidifier. High purity potassium acetate is also an important basic ingredient in the manufacture of medicines (e.g.: penicillin-G potassium).
Side effects:
Harmful side effects of potassium acetate or acetic acid as an additive are currently unknown (in the absence of misuse).
Toxicological Data:
3250 mg-kg-1 (LD50, rat, oral).
