Trospium or its chloride salt is an antispasmodic drug used to treat the symptoms of hyperactive bladder. It belongs to the group of parasympatholytics. The active ingredient is commercially available in coated tablet form.
Trospium inhibits the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which controls the state of tension in many organs. The antispasmodic properties of the active ingredient cause relaxation of the urinary bladder wall muscles and tension of the bladder sphincter. This improves symptoms such as urinary incontinence, urinary urgency and frequent urination.
Due to its hydrophobic state, the drug hardly passes the blood-brain barrier and therefore shows practically no adverse effects on the central nervous system.
The agent should not be used in the following conditions:
The most common side effects include:

LD50 (Maus, intravenös): 11,2 mg/kg
