Basics

Zinc oxide is an active ingredient that is used to treat skin conditions such as diaper rash, dermatitis, hemorrhoids and minor skin injuries. It is a chemical compound of zinc and oxygen. Zinc oxide has drying, skin-protecting, wound-healing and slightly antiseptic properties. Zinc oxide is also used in various cosmetic products. It is also offered in fixed combinations with other active ingredients. Zinc oxide can be used as a sun cream because it prevents UV light from penetrating. Zinc oxide is available in the form of various ointments or as a shaking mixture. Zinc oxide forms colorless hexagonal crystals, but can also be available as a white powder. It is insoluble in water and is found in nature as zincite.

Effect

Zinc oxide has drying, astringent, skin-protecting and skin-caring, wound-healing and slightly disinfectant properties. Zinc oxide can also be used to treat fungal diseases. These effects are achieved by releasing zinc ions from the ointment. It only acts locally on the applied area and represents a further physical barrier in addition to the skin. Due to the purely local effect, there is no absorption into the body and therefore no systemic effects (effects in the bloodstream).
