Basics

Fenticonazole is an active ingredient used to treat fungal infections (antifungal) in dermatology and gynecology. It belongs to the group of azole antifungals. Fenticonazole is administered for vaginal fungal infections or fungal diseases on the skin. It is usually present in medicines as fenticonazole nitrate, a white, crystalline (crystal-forming) powder that is insoluble in water.

Effect

Fenticonazole works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14𝞪-demethylase in fungi. This in turn leads to the inhibition of ergosterol synthesis. Ergosterol is a very important building block in the structure of fungal cell membranes. Fenticonazole blocks the enzyme and thus inhibits growth and stops fungi from multiplying.

Dosage

Always take fenticonazole exactly as described in the package leaflet or as advised by your doctor.

The usual recommended dose as a vaginal suppository is one 600 mg suppository. If symptoms persist, a second supp ository can be inserted after 3 days. Vaginal suppositories are for vaginal use ONLY and should not be swallowed under any circumstances. The suppository should be inserted as deeply as possible into the vagina before going to bed.

If Fenticonazole is used for a fungal infection in the genital area, your partner should also be treated with Fenticonazole to prevent re-infection.

If used as a cream, it should be applied thinly to the affected area 1-2 times a day. The affected area(s) should be washed and dried well beforehand.

Side effects

The following side effects may occur:

  • Burning in the vagina or on the skin
  • reddening of the skin

Interactions

  • The vaginal suppositories contain fatty excipients that can damage latex contraceptives (e.g. condoms)
  • Fenticonazole can render contraceptive spermicides ineffective; simultaneous use is therefore strongly discouraged

Contraindications

Fenticonazole must NOT be taken in the following cases

  • if you are allergic to fenticonazole
